In my heart, I am a teacher. Additionally, I am blessed with the spirit of an entrepreneur. I have been a teacher, a banker, a business manager, an investment professional, a consultant, and a guitar instructor. I have enjoyed progressive and rewarding careers in the private sector, in public and private schools, and in local government. Through collaboration and leadership, I have created two career positions which I came to hold myself. One of the positions I created was in an international setting. Apart from this, I have owned and operated my own small business. Aside from being a teacher, I can write with certainty that the best type of job to have is the one you created yourself.
Experience
I have direct classroom experience teaching English Literature (grade 9), English as a Second Language (grades 6 through 12), Personal Finance (grades 10 through 12), Accounting (grades 9 through 12) and Guitar Instruction (grades 6 through 8). Additionally, I have created clubs and after school activity programs having to do with English and Guitar, teaching students of all ages, including adults.
Qualifications
My official qualifications allow me to teach business studies, career readiness, entrepreneurialism, personal finance, accounting, banking and finance, consumer lending, commercial lending, and book-keeping.
My background combined with my experience qualifies me to teach English Literature, English as a Second Language, Mass Communications and writing comprehension. I will soon have an endorsement from the State of South Dakota to teach Economics and English Literature.
In addition, I am an experienced guitar instructor. I have played professionally for many years. Alas, I have no official denotation related to the guitar but neither did the great Andre Segovia! I'll just have to play you a tune.
I have often heard the question voiced: "Well, yes, but how does your professional experience relate to teaching?" In response, I try to say as respectfully as I can that a business teacher without business experience is about as useful as a guitar teacher without any guitar playing experience! I am sure you have heard of the axiom: "One can't simply read about a violin to learn how to play a violin. One must actually play the violin." The same is true in business.
Real world, professional work experience is needed in our schools. My niche is that I have held progressive, competitive positions, touching on a number of different industries. I have actual career experience in important, useful areas. The goal of many schools is to prepare our young people for the life experience they will have after leaving school. I often struggle to understand how this can be accomplished solely by employing teachers who have never held a position outside of a classroom, especially in the area of business studies.
Please understand, I come from a family of teachers. My wife is a teacher. I have the greatest respect for teachers. I will say, however, with confidence, that there is an absolute need for schools to employ at least a few teachers who have worked outside of a school district. We need teachers of all kinds to balance our message and to provide the best education possible for our students.
My message to you is that in my heart I am a teacher. My diverse life experiences is what makes me interesting and valuable to my students. This in turn allows me to build rapport and interest in my subject matter. At the end of the day, I want my students to learn from my experiences.
My life experience makes up the very foundation of my strength of an educator. My qualified versatility is what makes me an excellent hire for schools.
